"Corn:"
  • Corn:  Midwest wetness a much bigger worry this week than last week when temperatures were balmy in the 60s-70sF.  Evaporation is 3 times more efficient at 70F than 40F, and Upper Midwest farms will have trouble exceeding 40F from Wednesday through Sunday.  Not only do fields stay soggy, but also soil temperatures are in danger of declining with at least a week of cold weather.  Cloudiness is expected to dominate the Midwest Friday-Sunday with very cold, unstable air aloft, preventing sunlight from warming  fields. All of this points to a slower planting campaign in 2007 compared with the rapid progress of recent years, especially as growers strive to plant 10-15% additional acres.  Key info below: December-April precipitation is the heaviest in 8 years.

"Abundant spring precipitation is a..."
  • Abundant spring precipitation is a double-edged sword, replenishing deep-layer reserves but also creating a risk of soggy seed beds at planting time and shallow rooting.   Excellent yields (1973 and 1979) occurred with deep-rooted crops that tapped into rich subsoil moisture.  Fields did not drain properly in the 1983 and 1991, poor production years.  Planting was delayed, due to soggy fields, and shallow roots developed in seed beds compacted with water.  Moisture stress developed in a hot, dry summer as shallow roots failed to tap into subsoil moisture.
